Finding Her Voice in a New Land

Relocating from one continent to another is not merely about changing your geographical coordinates; it’s about redefining your life and career narratives. Carmen Salameh, the founder of the Asian Business Owners podcast and owner of Octo Gen offers a compelling narrative of courage, resilience, and reinvention as she talks about her transition from Paris to Hong Kong.

Following Her Heart

The journey started when Carmen, feeling constrained by her corporate job in Paris, realized she needed a change. Despite leading a seemingly ideal life with a stable job and a bustling social life, she longed for new challenges that could offer intellectual stimulation and personal growth. Her moment of realization dawned during the COVID-19 pandemic, when time in isolation led her to introspection. Inspired by her father, an entrepreneur himself, Carmen took a leap of faith and followed her heart to Hong Kong, a city she’d never been to before.

In Hong Kong, Carmen initially juggled her corporate career while exploring the bustling Asian metropolis. It was this city that enabled her to serendipitously find her voice through her work as a podcaster. It helped that she reignited a relationship with an old friend, whom she eventually married. Carmen stayed in Hong Kong, attracted by both the city’s vibrant expat community and the potential of new beginnings it held for her personal and professional life.

Carmen’s energy and determination are palpable as she strives to navigate the complex terrain of entrepreneurship. More than a mantra, “Unstoppable” by Sia is her anthem, fueling her drive and determination.

Being An Entrepreneur, Starting A Podcast

Carmen’s professional pivot came through both necessity and passion. Having exited her corporate job, she braved the freelance market and began assisting a range of clients in digital marketing. Yet, she yearned for something more personal and impactful. Inspired by the stories she encountered and driven by her love for podcasts—a medium she has cherished for years—Carmen launched the Asian Business Owners podcast.

Carmen’s relocation to Hong Kong is about more than geography; it’s about crafting a narrative where she is the author of her destiny. This journey encompasses taking charge of her life, both personally and professionally.

Her podcast became a conduit not just for connecting with fellow entrepreneurs but also for discovering and sharing authentic stories that delve into the nitty-gritty of entrepreneurship. It’s a celebration of candid conversations that eschew the glamorization of entrepreneurship, focusing instead on the real, often challenging experiences of business owners across Asia. (This is exactly what Womenpreneur Asia is trying to accomplish too!)

Podcasting As A Strategic Move

The decision to create a podcast was strategic, but it quickly transcended business strategy to become Carmen’s passion project. Throughout this adventure, Carmen credits her personal network—and the larger network she built through her show—as crucial to her success.

Rebranding her podcast from Hong Kong Business Owners to Asian Business Owners allowed her to embrace narratives from a broader geographical pool, reflecting the diverse cultural tapestry and multifaceted business challenges prevalent in Asia.

Whether it’s her father or her podcast guests, Carmen is continually inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit and resilience she witnesses.

Beyond business, Carmen values personal growth, balancing her professional life with regular gym sessions, and indulging in her love for listening to podcasts and Italian cuisine.

Bold Decisions Can Be Surprising

Carmen Salameh exemplifies how profound change stems from seemingly simple realizations and bold decisions. Her story encourages everyone to pursue their own paths, replete with discovery and personal fulfillment.

For those living through uncertainty, discontentment or contemplating their next big move, let Carmen’s story be your beacon of hope. It is a reminder that life is woven together by choices and bold moments. Carmen shows that with introspection, the right people by your side, and a little courage, anyone can find their voice and make a lasting impact in their own world.
